The anatomical neck is created by a narrow contraction directly distal towards the head of humerus. It is located near the head along with the greater and lesser tubercles laterally.
It provides connection to the capsular ligament of the shoulder joint, except superiorly in which the capsule is deficient.
For the passage of tendon of long head of biceps brachii, medially the capsule extends down from the anatomical neck to the shaft for around 1-2 cm.
