The mastoid notch is a deep groove located on the medial side of the mastoid process, for the connection of the digastric muscle.
Structure
It is a deep notch located on the medial side of the mastoid process. It travels within the sagittal plane, running in the middle of the stylomastoid foramen anteriorly as well as posteriorly in the posterior side of the mastoid process. It gives attachment to the posterior belly of the digastric muscle.
Relations
- A light groove called the occipital groove is located medial towards this, in which occipital artery is located.
- The mastoid notch lies on the inferomedial margin of each mastoid process.
- The posterior belly of the digastric muscle attaches here.
