Error code: 0xc0000225 means Windows cannot find the System Files used for booting, aka, BCD (Boot Configuration Data). In other words, if your system files are corrupted, disk file system has bad configuration, or if you have faulty hardware, the 0xc0000225 error would show up.
Possible Causes of the error
- The System files are corrupt.
- The disk File system has bad configuration.
- Hardware fault.
Let’s have a look at how we can fix the error.
Method 1: Run a disk check and system file check
1. Power off your computer, and insert your installation media, be it a USB flash drive, or a DVD. Then restart your computer.
2. If you’re using a USB flash drive, press the appropriate functional key to boot from it. If you’re using a CD or DVD disc, you should be able to see “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD“. Follow the instruction, and boot.
3. Choose your language preference, and move on.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click Troubleshoot.
6. Click Advanced options. Click Command Prompt.
7. In the command window, type in “sfc/scannow” “chk/dsk c: /f /r” and press the Enter key on your keyboard after each command.
The letter C here stands for the drive where you place your Windows installation files. Most of you might place it in C drive, some might place it in D, E, or some other drives. Change the letter accordingly.
Method 2: Check hardware failure
Hardware failure is one of the causes of this problem. But it is recommended to get it checked by a professional rather than checking it by yourself. You should contact your PC or laptop manufacturer about the error, and have them get the hardware devices in your PC checked.
Method 3: Automatic Repair
1. Repeat the Steps 1 to 6 from Method 1. Click Automatic Repair.
2. Wait for the process to complete.
3. When the repair process finishes, Restart your computer. Check if the error code 0xc0000225 is gone.
Method 4: Rebuild the BCD manually
Since the boot error is often caused by a missing BCD, rebuilding it can be a helpful solution.
Here are the steps to rebuild the BCD:
1. Boot from the Windows install disc.
2. Click on Repair your computer after selecting proper language, time and keyboard input.
3. Select the Windows installation drive, which is usually C:\ , and click Next.
4. Choose Command Prompt when the System Recovery Options box appears.
5. Write “ bootrec / rebuilbcd “ command and press ENTER.
6. If the program finds a Windows installation and asks whether it should add it to the boot list, press Y.
Fix 5: Mark partition as active using Diskpart
The built-in Diskpart Windows utility can also be used to mark a partition as active. Note that the marked partition must contain the Windows bootloader for Windows to load correctly.
Follow the steps below to run Diskpart and change the disk’s status:
1. Boot from the Windows install disc.
2. Click on Repair your computer after after selecting proper language, time and keyboard input.
3. Select the Windows installation drive, which is usually C:\ and click Next.
4. Choose Command Prompt when the System Recovery Options box appears.
5. Type “ diskpart ” command and press ENTER afterwards.
6. Then type “ list volume “
7. Then type “ select volume X ” to select the volume you want to mark as active and press ENTER.
8. Then type “ active “ to mark the currently active volume and press ENTER.
