Frequency is the number of occurrences of something that has happened. The frequency of a particular observation tells us how many times that observation has occurred in the data.
In statistics frequency distribution is a table or plot which shows the frequency of different observations in given data or sample.
Example: The score of a football team in last matches played in the last week is given below:
1, 4, 2, 2, 3, 1, 1, 0, 3, 5, 4, 2, 3, 3
- To plot frequency distribution table firstly, put the numbers in order:
0, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5
- It shows that 1 occurred 3 times, 2 also occurred times. Etc.
- Now plot the table.

From the table we can clearly see that:
- The team scored 0 in one match.
- 3 goals happened most.
- Only once the team scored 5 goals.
